ES. Building a global exhibition business requires more than identifying growth opportunities; it demands the judgement to know which opportunities are worth pursuing. What defining experience shaped your approach to making those decisions, and how has it influenced the way you lead dmg events?
Geoff Dickinson. Entrepreneurial Foundation Spending over a decade as an entrepreneur launching and scaling exhibition businesses in Dubai (which were later acquired by Messe Frankfurt and Clarion) taught me the value of direct market validation. In creating new events we seek data, feedback and guidance at every level from government to business, from associations to industry voices. We are very entrepreneurial as a business but always base our decisions on launching events that can best serve the industries and countries they operate in. dmg events has a very entrepreneurial culture and I am very proud of our amazing teams who constantly innovate new content for our existing events and actively seek out exciting launch opportunities.
- Judgement Over Growth: Knowing which opportunities to skip matters more than chasing every new launch; resources must align with deep industry relevance rather than short-term scale. We focus heavily on trying to create best in class events that truly serve the sectors we operate in. We seek to gain active involvement and support from government ministries to align with the objectives for the nation. If the event can become a global show, then we will host government ministries from around the world to discuss the key issues and opportunities they see for the sector. This is also backed up by involving CEOs from the leading companies in the sector. Our events our content rich – featuring content that is governmental, strategic, business and technical. We focus on every area of the sector and also produce content for youth and the future. Our events aim to bring in exhibitors from all over the world to offer extremely diverse and comprehensive products and services content.
- Empowered Leadership at dmg events: This mindset translates into giving teams autonomy while holding strict commercial and experiential standards across nearly 100 annual events. dmg events focus on high level thought leadership content that helps to drive progress in its primary sectors such as Energy and Construction. We are heavily focused on quality and compelling content and less about the margin. It is our belief that content rich events require investment and seeking high margins is a negative approach. Ultimately best in class events that serve the needs of their industry will attract more sponsors, delegates, exhibitors and visitors and whilst margins will be lower this is compensated by higher revenues and profits.

ES. Taking an established exhibition brand into a new market involves balancing a proven business model with local industry needs. How do you assess whether a market is ready for a new event, and what determines whether an international expansion can succeed over the long term?
Geoff Dickinson. Local-First Grounding: Market readiness depends on active listening to buyers, exhibitors. government stakeholders, and regional supply chains rather than copy-pasting a foreign template. Our events are dedicated to both serving both the sectors and countries they operate in. This means content has to be adapted to suit the environment in which they operate.
- Geo-Adaptation: Long-term success is determined by whether a concept can reflect and respond to the needs of a nation—such as adapting global brands into distinct regional editions. These events could in time scale and become international shows if the ambitions of the country are substantial and they have the desire to be active in a sector that is globally critical – such as energy.
- Sustainable Moats: True viability requires structural market growth, regulatory support, and clear value for both local SMEs and multinational exhibitors.
ES. dmg events operates across multiple sectors with different investment cycles, customer expectations and growth prospects. How do you decide where to concentrate resources across the portfolio, and how do you balance established revenue generators with emerging opportunities?
Geoff Dickinson. Portfolio Diversity: dmg events spans energy, construction, interiors, hospitality, Food, Manufacturing Healthcare, and Defense/Security – each carrying distinct macroeconomic cycles.
- Core vs. Emerging: Cash-generative flagship events in our construction and energy portfolios such as Big 5 Global (construction) and ADIPEC and Gastech (energy) – help fund early-stage incubation of geo-clones and events in other key sectors. We reinvest profits from our major events into developing a pipeline of events for the future. Profits are also re-invested back into our flagship events to continue to develop topical and powerful content to retain their positions within their sectors and to keep growing. Indias economy is growing at tremendous pace and this will require a huge investment in Energy. We are excited about developing our Power and Utilities India event in Mumbai from 19 to 21 May, 2027.
- Disciplined Capital: We are very disciplined and happy to fail fast not just to focus on chasing the winners – the events that are scaling – but also to stop events if they are not getting support from customers as this shows they are not serving a need and therefore should not continue.
ES. As industries such as energy undergo significant structural change, established exhibitions must evolve without losing their core audiences. What strategic choices are necessary to keep flagship events such as ADIPEC relevant while expanding their value to a changing industry?
Geoff Dickinson. Balancing Continuity and Transition: Events like ADIPEC must honor their traditional oil and gas base while integrating broader energy transition, decarbonization, and industrial technology dialogues. ADIPEC has become an all-energy event in response to what countries and the sector truly need. Energy will move into renewables and green energy – but this can not happen today. Energy security is vital to every country to power homes, schools, hospitals, transportation and vital services – but it can be done responsibly reducing carbon emissions and transitioning into clean energy.
- Value Expansion: Relevance is maintained by producing very comprehensive and topical content. The conference sessions and streams have to cover government objectives, strategic and business goals, technical sessions along with specific tracks for key sector initiatives such as decarbonization, technology, maritime, youth and many other topics. The show floor has to also mirror this and be broken into sections covering everything from production to transmission and from carbon capture to AI and Technology.
- Audience Retention: Is driven by compelling thought leadership content by hosting Ministers and CEOs from all over the world along with Technologists, Strategists, Financiers and Technical Experts. The show floor covers every aspect of the energy supply chain and the latest technologies for cleaner energy and efficiency.
Q5. Exhibition businesses can grow through launching new events, expanding existing brands or acquiring established portfolios. How do you determine which route offers the strongest long-term opportunity, and what must be in place to turn expansion into sustainable business value?
Geoff Dickinson. Scale and Launch: dmg events focus purely on trade shows that are in sectors vital to global economic development – such as Energy, Construction, Medical, Manufacturing, Food and Security. We develop industry knowledge within our event teams so that they truly understand the sectors their events serve and the counties that we operate in. This means our primary focus is always on developing and scaling existing events through compelling and comprehensive content and then using our knowledge and the power of our brands to geo-clone events in new countries. We always adapt our geo-clone events to match the needs and cultures of the countries we operate in.
- Acquire: Acquisitions are considered if they can either accelerate our growth in a primary dmg events sector or in a country that we have ambitions in. Post-acquisition or expansion success demands cultural integration, retention of local leadership, and continuous reinvestment in digital tools and content quality.
ES. Exhibitors increasingly expect measurable returns, while organisers must protect margins and continue investing in event quality. How can exhibition businesses strengthen commercial performance without compromising the relationships, content and experiences that keep customers returning?
Geoff Dickinson. Measurable ROI: Our focus first and foremost is on topical, high level quality content – as this will attract the right environment and customer connections. Organizers must provide exhibitors with verified lead-generation data, digital matchmaking, and targeted VIP hosting. We monitor deal tracking at our events so that we can see if we are achieving good results for our customers and for the countries and cities that we operate in.
ES. During your time as UFI President in 2024, you had a platform to bring the global exhibition community together around shared priorities. Which conversation or initiative from that period do you believe deserves greater attention today, and what would it take to translate that priority into lasting change across the industry?
Geoff Dickinson. Defining Theme (“Changes to Chances”): During 2024 UFI leadership tenure, the core focus centered on helping the global exhibition community navigate structural shifts, sustainability, digital acceleration, and workforce evolution.
- Priorities Needing Attention: Talent development, responsible AI integration in event logistics, and carbon reduction/sustainability tracking across global trade fairs deserve continued cross-border commitment.
- Translating Priority into Action: Realizing these goals requires unified association metrics, shared decarbonization toolkits, and proactive advocacy with host cities and governments.
- Trust: With AI developing at pace – face to face events are more important than ever before. The need for human beings to gather together to discuss important needs and trends in person is critical. It is only when we meet together and work together that we can build key relationships and trust and move forward positively together for the benefit of everyone. It is impossible in today’s world to truly trust what we read or see from the digital world – the face-to-face environment has always been and will continue to be where the best human connections are made.
