Roger Kellerman专栏:若AI摘要足以概括,那便不是真正的会议

If an AI Summary Is Enough, It Was Never a Meeting

In November, the business events industry will gather at IBTM World in Barcelona under the theme The Age of Disruption. The challenges are significant, including the rapid rise of AI, budget constraints, and return on investment. However, we often misunderstand the true disruption. Our industry’s main challenge is not AI itself, but the underlying question: why is human presence necessary?

I write this out of genuine appreciation for our industry. My concern is not the frequency of meetings, but that many of us attend them without a clear purpose. Consider the current landscape: In a Skift Meetings survey of 1,000 executives, three in ten employees said they skipped meetings because AI would attend for them. Note-taking agents now join events on behalf of registered attendees. But as one strategist noted, sponsors are investing in human engagement and attention, not machine presence.

This also highlights another important point: If a bot can capture the full value of an event, then that value lies in the content, which would then best be delivered through a webinar. AI is not ending meetings; it is showing us, one skipped session at a time, which events were never true meetings. It may be the most honest auditor our industry has ever faced.

Then there’s the matter of the account book we signed but never balanced. Net Zero Carbon Events counts 500-plus signatories. Only 144 of the 302 obliged to report actually have. Fewer than 40 have published a pathway to halving emissions by 2030, and attendee accommodation still goes unmeasured in 87 per cent of cases. You cannot toast record delegate numbers and long-haul growth with one hand while blindly signing net-zero pledges with the other. Sooner or later, clients, sponsors and regulators will hold us responsible for our unbalanced ledgers

Turning to qualitative metrics, planner optimism is at a five-year high, with 85 per cent optimistic according to American Express Global Business Travel. For the second consecutive year, the top priority remains “memorable attendee experiences”. It is worth noting, however, that the basis for this metric often consists only of badge scans, attendance figures, and social media impressions. When asked about concrete outcomes or decisions made, responses are limited. Even memorable experiences are not always meaningful or necessary. Our core value is facilitating trust, alignment, and decision-making, yet many events fail to deliver these outcomes and offer merely superficial engagement.

IBTM World frames this as The Age of Disruption. But the real disruption isn’t the arrival of AI; it’s that the business events industry can no longer rely on presence, promises or rhetoric alone. The biggest change is the rise of accountability, which now demands tangible results.

My elevator test: What parts of your event could not survive an AI summary? If the answer is ‘networking’, then design for networking. Beyond raw growth, what will your event execute better this year than last? Bigger is not the goal. Better is – and provably so. And finally, name one decision made at your last event that would not otherwise have been made. If you can’t, you didn’t host a meeting; you hosted a party with lanyards and a press release.

Most meetings fail this test – which is why the ones that pass deserve to inherit everything: the budgets, the stages, the future.

My definition of disruption is the rise of accountability. Am I wrong? What’s yours? Walk the show floor in Barcelona and let me know. Change my mind. Convince me why your event deserves to persist. If you succeed, you will have outdone any AI summary.
