The Gold Coast has secured the International Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (ICSES) for September 2032, beating out competing bids from Germany, India, and Colombia.
The four-day event will take place at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, bringing over 1,400 surgeons, researchers, and medical professionals from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The gathering is projected to generate A$6.5 million (US$4.6 million) for the local economy.
Timed alongside the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the triennial congress marks its return to Australia for the first time since Sydney hosted in 1998.
“As a host region for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Gold Coast will be at the centre of global conversations around sport, performance, health, innovation and legacy,” said Andrea Molnar, director of business events at Experience Gold Coast.
The bid was spearheaded by Ezekiel Tan, an orthopaedic hand and upper limb surgeon at Gold Coast University Hospital, through a campaign launched in 2018.
The successful securing of the congress was supported by Tourism and Events Queensland and Tourism Australia via its Business Events Bid Fund Program.
