GLOBAL STANDARDS, LOCAL SPIRIT

Art Deco flourished in Prague in the interwar period, shaped by Czech Cubism and Rondo-Cubism, two dominant styles in the Czechoslovak capital. Among the most imposing buildings were Café Imperial, Adria Palace and the Municipal Library. Hilton Old Town Prague was built much later, in 2003, in a modernist style with a curving facade. One Irish interior designer went so far as to call the exterior “the ugliest building in Prague”. While the facade may divide opinions, the interior is now widely praised after the 2026 revamp.

David Collins, the designer credited with the quote, oversaw the interior refresh a decade ago. The hotel refreshed his Art Deco-inspired concept earlier this year. Thanks to the hotel’s location, a stone’s throw from the city centre, we recommend exploring not only the main landmarks but also the Žižkov and Karlín districts, two youthful areas famed for creative industries and unusual buildings. It is hard to find a hotel in Prague more central than this. For guests seeking convenience, this is the right address.

With everything at hand, the winding cobblestone streets lined with imposing Art Nouveau facades invite exploration on foot.

Prague sits in the heart of Europe and serves as a major air traffic hub. Serving nearly 200 destinations, Prague Airport supports rising tourist numbers and makes the city feel like a true metropolis. From the airport, guests can take the omnipresent Bolt or Uber, or choose a shuttle arranged by Hilton. The journey takes some twenty minutes. Alternatively, guests can take the metro or bus, which run smoothly and reliably. Still, many guests arrive in Prague by car. The city is about four hours from both Vienna and Munich. Both journeys are efficient and take guests across scenic landscapes. Once guests arrive at the centrally located hotel, they can park in the hotel’s underground garage, though it costs 32 EUR per day. With everything at hand, the winding cobblestone streets lined with imposing Art Nouveau facades invite exploration on foot. Cycling around the city centre is still poorly organised. Venturing to the trails around Vyšehrad or Prague Castle is therefore wise for those who want to explore on two wheels. Despite some logistical predicaments, the city’s accessibility is exemplary and compares with Vienna’s.

the 2026 revamp aimed to refresh the slightly outdated lobby with Art Deco pride.

The hotel’s lobby and restaurant underwent a major redesign in 2026. Led by IBA architectural studio, the revamp aimed to refresh the slightly outdated lobby with Art Deco pride. The renovation centres on the imposing Crystal Tapestry: Prague Panorama by Preciosa, which adorns the wall behind the concierge desk. Dark green upholstery, greenery, and brass details add vibrancy and subtle illumination, highlighting the lobby’s appealing Art Deco character. We were highly impressed by the breakfast room layout, which feels both intimate and community-oriented. While sipping coffee, we felt the place was somewhat crowded and kitschy. A less-is-more approach would be prudent: eliminate the unnecessary and retain the vital and beautiful. From the outside, the Hilton Prague Old Town oozes anonymity, blending into the surrounding facades. Its inconspicuousness is an advantage, as guests are pleasantly surprised when they waltz into the opulent lobby.

At this outpost, the staff lived up to the standards and went the extra mile for guests.

Hilton personnel are famed for rigorous training and professionalism. At this outpost, the staff lived up to the standards and went the extra mile for guests. A pleasant surprise was the number of staff in the restaurant hall, who ensured every coffee mug was replenished swiftly and every plate cleared on time. The only drawback was the health and spa club, where staff seemed absent. We thus had carte blanche to explore the spa.

We tasted the cuisine at breakfast. As befits a Hilton, breakfast is half buffet, half à la carte. We relished the Eggs Benedict and the thoughtfully selected range of international dishes. One of the hotel’s most praiseworthy initiatives is its own honey, produced by diligent bees in its rooftop beehive. The menu also included local dishes, such as koláče, though it could have been more creatively designed. Still, the breakfast caters to practically every taste. The freshly squeezed juice and excellent coffee served in the lobby bar were among the best surprises. Though we didn’t taste the dinner menu, breakfast suggests it is polished and tasty.

Hotel rooms

As soon as we set foot in the room, we couldn’t resist testing the bed. It was exactly as we expected: firm, well-made, with superb linen. Made by Cardo, a Hungarian manufacturer of bespoke beds, it serves as the room’s centrepiece. Otherwise, the design is toned-down, without daring colour combinations or designer pieces. The hidden wardrobe helps enlarge the room, while the grey and beige wall hues create a stimulating work environment. We were content with the spacious work desk and stunning views of the city centre, but felt the design was too predictable. Daubing the otherwise cosy lounge chair in a more Art Deco-style colour would certainly elevate the artistic impression. Luckily, the bedside lamps are Art Deco, with an exposed brass skeleton. The bathroom echoes this design, with white marble tiles dominating the shower space. Amber-scented Edition Voyage cosmetics befit a hotel of this calibre and elevate the stay. While the room is designed for both leisure and business guests, we missed an art piece that would tie the design to the surroundings and perhaps to the Art Deco now seen in the renovated lobby.

Meetings centre

Eleven meeting rooms in the heart of the city are an impressive number. We peeked into several and were amazed by the natural daylight, the stunning vitrage adorning the windows, and the views of the city centre below. Although not designed in a contemporary style, the meeting rooms are functional and equipped with excellent technology and AV. The lobby and restaurant also offer more event possibilities, where organisers can incorporate local cuisine. To boot, Prague offers plenty of incentive experiences: from a Kafka treasure hunt to spotting David Černý’s unusual sculptures or pouring the perfect pilsner at the Pilsner Urquell Museum, event organisers have plenty of options.

DESSERT – The extras

The crystal tapestry adorning the entrance pays homage to the patina on Prague’s undulating rooftops and facades. It was made by Preciosa, the Czech Republic’s preeminent glass-making company. A statement piece like this can transform a hotel’s image. We hope the rest of the hotel’s renovation will follow suit.

FLOP – NEGATIVE SURPRISES

Although having a spa is commendable, it is critically undersized for the number of rooms. A boutique sauna and tiny pool cannot accommodate 300 guests. While the hotel is limited in size, a sauna schedule would help. Though this is not a resort-meeting hotel, business guests would certainly appreciate a more spacious place to unwind and regenerate. Also, charging for Wi-Fi seems outdated.

TOP – POSITIVE SURPRISES

Hilton Old Town Prague keeps a big secret close to its heart: its rooftop is home to a true beehive, where urban bees produce amber-hued honey. Beyond such commendable initiatives, the hotel actively supports local community projects. Every year, the hotel supports one animal species at the Prague Zoo. This year, it’s the Humboldt Penguin’s turn!

SUSTAINABLE ENDEAVOURS

Recently, Hilton announced it achieved a 50.9% reduction in carbon emissions and water use across its managed hotels, largely thanks to its in-house platform, LightStay. At its central Prague outpost, the brand has also made considerable progress.

Attention to sustainability shows in the smallest details: cosmetics come in shampoo dispensers, water fountains appear on every floor, and reminders to save water are everywhere.

The hotel also uses its own honey produced by rooftop bees, a laudable step toward zero-kilometre cuisine. To further share its progress, we recommend the hotel create an exhibition showcasing its sustainability achievements. Spreading awareness is a sure way to encourage behavioural change among guests.

CREATIVITY

Hilton hotels’ creativity is often subtle and doesn’t reveal itself through bold designer pieces or daring colours. Instead, the decor’s quality and the space’s elegance often show attention to detail. At Hilton Prague Old Town, though, the creativity is evident in the revamped lobby. Exposed brass details nod to the Art Deco movement, lively green-hued plush upholstery oozes lavishness, and the crystal installation turns heads as soon as guests check in. The geometric lights add character in the rooms, too. To take the next step, we recommend that management consider an Art Deco-themed exhibition or select pieces that tell the movement’s story throughout the hotel.

the hotel is ushering in a new era and attracting discerning guests who seek not only Hilton standards but also the singular design that once defined Prague.

Art Deco is the lifeblood of Hilton Old Town Prague, giving it sustenance and a compelling story. After the recent unveiling of a well-crafted lobby that revealed a bolder, more contemporary design, the hotel is ushering in a new era and attracting discerning guests who seek not only Hilton standards but also the singular design that once defined Prague. The price of staying at this Hilton matches city competitors and meets the high standards the behemoth hotel chain ensures. The boutique health club gives guests another reason to stay, even if most will likely crisscross the city centre and go exploring. We recommend this hotel to guests who know what to expect from an international brand and appreciate quality craftsmanship. Plus, the hotel has an enviable location, steps from Prague’s living room. Art Deco permeates the air here.
