One year in: on-time, on-budget, and already delivering for Los Angeles
On October 7, 2026, Mayor Karen Bass joined City Councilmembers, labor leaders, and local business owners at the Los Angeles Convention Center to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the $2.6 billion Expansion and Modernization Project. One year after breaking ground in October 2025, the venture remains on-time and on-budget.
The expansion will connect the South and West Exhibit Halls over Pico Boulevard, creating one contiguous 749,426-square-foot space. The project is being built in phases, with construction leading up to the 2028 Olympic Games, pausing for the event, then continuing through completion in 2029.
Jobs and Wages
The massive initiative is already putting paychecks in Angelenos' pockets. Since construction began, it has delivered nearly $10 million in wages and created more than 1,700 new union jobs. Another $500 million in contracts has been awarded to small and minority-owned businesses.
Hundreds of apprentices are building careers in the trades, including transitional workers, veterans, those with involvement in the criminal justice system, and foster care alumni.
"With thousands of new union jobs created and almost $10 million in wages paid, this project is putting paychecks in Angelenos' pockets and already delivering an economic boost for Los Angeles," said Mayor Bass.
Yvonne Wheeler, president of the LA County Federation of Labor, called the project "an investment in working people."
New Business Commitments
The promise of the expanded facility is already attracting major events. Eighteen new conventions have booked the Convention Center post-completion, projected to bring 186,000 visitors to the Downtown campus and generate over $400 million in economic impact. Booked conventions include the American Heart Association, the American Chemical Society, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, and the National Association for College Admission Counseling.
"One year in, the expansion of the Los Angeles Convention Center isn't just transforming Downtown LA. It's creating a material difference for Angelenos by delivering quality jobs directly to our neighbors," said Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson.
Once complete, the project is expected to deliver 15,000+ jobs, attract 500,000+ new visitors annually, and generate $150 million in new visitor spending each year.
