The exhibition Porcelain: The Lithographic Mold, curated by art collector and print expert Anil Relia, is on display at the Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum (LD Museum) in Ahmedabad from 6 September to 1 November 2026.

The exhibition explores the relationship between lithographic printing and porcelain craftsmanship, tracing how printed religious and mythological imagery was transformed into three-dimensional decorative and devotional objects. It brings together porcelain pieces and the lithographs that inspired them, offering visitors an insight into an overlooked chapter of India’s artistic and industrial history.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, chromolithographic prints helped popularise religious imagery across India. Artists such as Raja Ravi Varma and printing establishments including Calcutta Art Studio contributed to the spread of these visual traditions. European and Japanese porcelain manufacturers, alongside Indian enterprises such as Bengal Potteries, adapted these images into porcelain objects, translating printed figures, jewellery, clothing and facial expressions into sculptural forms.

Curated from Relia’s collection, the exhibition highlights the intersection of art, printing technology, industrial production and devotional culture. By presenting the original visual references alongside porcelain objects, it demonstrates how advances in reproduction and manufacturing helped carry familiar imagery into everyday life.

The exhibition also underscores the importance of private collections and museums in preserving material culture and documenting the connections between artistic practice and industrial history.
