International business event arrivals in New Zealand continue to show strong growth, with August 2026 delegate numbers significantly exceeding both 2025 and pre-pandemic figures.

According to Stats NZ international arrivals data, 8,212 international delegates arrived in New Zealand for business events in August 2026. This represents a 28.5 per cent increase compared to August 2025 (6,391 delegates) and a 24.6 per cent rise over August 2019 (6,589 delegates).

Peak body Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA) estimates these arrivals generated more than NZ$27 million (US$16.2 million) for the local economy in August alone.

“Business events have been on the rise recently, with our reputation and world-class infrastructure helping attract events to our shores,” said Lisa Hopkins, chief executive of BEIA. “It’s great to see that reflected in rising monthly international delegate arrivals, with August numbers well ahead of both last year and 2019.”

Arrivals were bolstered by strong delegate participation from Asia – including China, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea – alongside key trans-Tasman traffic. Australia served as the largest source market, contributing 4,874 delegates during the month.

The sector expects continued growth through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027. BEIA conservatively projects around 70,000 domestic and international delegates will attend business events in New Zealand between October and December 2026, followed by a major surge in international attendance expected in February 2027.

The latest performance reflects the broader economic significance of business events to the country. According to BEIA research published earlier this year, multi-day conferences contributed approximately NZ$925 million to the New Zealand economy in 2025.
