Cebu has been selected to host the 24th edition of Routes Asia in 2028, returning the region’s air service development event to the destination nine years after it last hosted in March 2019.

The announcement was made on October 21 during Routes World, with the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) serving as host. The forum brings together senior decision-makers to negotiate new air routes and expand regional connectivity across the Asia-Pacific.

The selection highlights Cebu’s growing role as a commercial, tourism, and aviation hub for the Visayas and Mindanao. Coming off major infrastructure developments – including a parallel runway inaugurated in 2025 – Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) handled 11.6 million passengers in 2025 and projects its capacity will reach 18 million annually once both runways operate simultaneously.

“Bringing Routes Asia back nine years later gives Cebu an important platform to showcase that progress directly to the airline network planners who can support its next phase of growth,” said Steven Small, vice president of air transport events at Informa.

MCIAA’s general manager Julius G. Neri noted that while the 2019 event was a success, the 2020 pandemic limited its long-term impact. “We recognise the importance of Routes Asia and the lasting opportunities it can bring to Cebu, particularly in strengthening air connectivity, tourism, and economic development.”
