Maharashtra is planning new convention centres in Nagpur, Pune, Kolhapur, Nashik and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar as part of efforts to strengthen its position as a destination for international Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE).

The plans were highlighted at the Indian Exhibition Industry Association’s (IEIA) MICE Industry Leaders Connect: Focus West, held on October 16, 2026, at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai.

Sanjay Yadav, Secretary of Tourism, Government of Maharashtra, outlined the proposed developments, stating that Nagpur was expected to receive a convention centre by 2027. Timelines for the facilities planned in the other four cities have not been confirmed in the reports reviewed.

The Maharashtra Convention Bureau is also expected to play a role in strengthening destination promotion, supporting international event bids and encouraging collaboration between government bodies and industry stakeholders. These efforts aim to improve Maharashtra’s ability to attract conferences, exhibitions and corporate business events.

At the gathering, Suman Billa, Additional Secretary and Director General of the Ministry of Tourism, stated that India accounts for approximately 1% of the global MICE business, highlighting the potential to expand the country’s presence in the international business-events market.

The discussions also included a proposal to establish a Western Region MICE Task Force covering Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Goa. The proposed initiative would encourage regional cooperation, joint destination promotion and coordinated efforts to attract international events.

IEIA President Sooraj Dhawan highlighted the importance of modern venues, connectivity, supportive policies and government-industry partnerships in strengthening India’s competitiveness.

The proposed infrastructure expansion and regional collaboration could support Maharashtra’s ambitions in the MICE sector. However, project budgets and confirmed timelines for most of the proposed convention centres remain undisclosed.
