The Ohio State University wants a bigger share of the meetings and events market, and it’s making its Columbus campus easier to book.

The university has launched Ohio State Events, a complimentary planning resource that connects organizers with more than 150 rentable spaces, along with catering, transportation, technology, and on-site event services.

Instead of navigating individual university departments, planners now have a single point of contact for venue selection, proposals, site visits, and events spanning multiple campus facilities. They also receive one contract and one invoice, regardless of how many university venues and services their event requires.

“Ohio State has an extraordinary depth of venues, expertise, and resources available to event planners, but those resources are distributed across a large and complex university,” said Elizabeth Willy, regional and national marketing manager for Ohio State Events.

“We launched Ohio State Events to create a more unified entry point for planners and provide a coordinated approach.”

Ohio State isn’t alone in simplifying campus bookings. The University of Michigan and Ohio University offer centralized conference services, while Purdue University provides professional conference planning and management.

A Campus That Doubles as a Content Partner

Available venues range from the 104,000-seat Ohio Stadium and the 20,000-seat Jerome Schottenstein Center to the Ohio Union, which offers 34 meeting and event spaces, including the Archie M. Griffin Ballroom.

The university also has the 151-room Blackwell Inn & Pfahl Conference Center, providing on-campus accommodations and meeting facilities.

But Ohio State’s biggest differentiator may have nothing to do with its meeting space.

Planners can incorporate faculty-led discussions, expert keynotes, laboratory tours, and customized workshops into their programs. Ohio State Events can also arrange stadium tours, sporting events, concerts, and other campus experiences.

“We facilitate direct connections to world-class faculty and staff,” Willy said.

Faculty members are enthusiastic about sharing their expertise with outside audiences, according to Ohio State. The Ohio State Events team maintains relationships across university departments and can help planners identify faculty speakers and other opportunities to incorporate academic expertise into their programs.

That approach allows organizers to use the university as both a venue and a content partner, potentially creating experiences that would be difficult to replicate in a traditional hotel or convention center.

Connecting the Campus With Columbus

The launch also formalizes a partnership with Experience Columbus and the Greater Columbus Sports Commission, positioning university facilities as part of the city’s broader meetings and events infrastructure.

Ohio State Events participates in select site visits hosted by Experience Columbus, giving convention prospects an opportunity to explore campus venues for off-site events or incorporate faculty expertise into their conference programming.

“The partnership with Experience Columbus is helping raise awareness of Ohio State as an event destination and connecting us with organizations and planners we might not otherwise reach,” Willy said.

Ohio State estimates that events hosted on campus will generate between $7 million and $10 million in economic impact for Columbus over the next year, underscoring the potential value of university facilities to the city’s meetings economy.

Major Test Coming in May

The university’s centralized planning model will face a major test in May when Ohio State hosts the 2027 National Science Olympiad, bringing high school STEM competitors from across the country to Columbus.

Students and their teams will stay in university residence halls, compete in facilities throughout campus, eat in dining halls, and rely on campus transportation.

The event will require coordination across academic facilities, housing, food service, transportation, technology, and event operations.

“Managing details like housing blocks, guest dietary requirements, and group transportation

across a massive campus requires treating the university like an integrated hospitality ecosystem rather than just a collection of meeting spaces,” Willy said.

Wayfinding and on-site support will also be critical to moving students, coaches, and spectators between venues.

But the event offers Ohio State more than an opportunity to demonstrate its ability to manage a complex, multi-venue program.

“The Science Olympiad National Tournament is the pinnacle of more than 450 regional and state tournaments each academic year,” said Mariah Lesar, Ohio Science Olympiad state director and education programs senior specialist in the Ohio State Office of Academic Affairs.

“This event pairs perfectly with all that The Ohio State University has to offer, introducing the brightest and most creative 6-12K STEM students in the United States to research opportunities, top-tier facilities, world-class academics and the quintessential Buckeye Experience.”

For Ohio State, the payoff could extend beyond meetings. The National Science Olympiad is expected to bring more than 2,000 students to campus, some of whom could return one day not as competitors, but as college freshmen.
